SU7173 Reading Abbey Ruins: Morris Dancers perform in front of the Abbey Ruins during the annual Waterfest. Founded by Henry I in 1121, the abbey was built on a gravel spur between the rivers Kennet and Thames  on a spot calculated to attract travellers between the major cities of the land. On the wall of the Chapter House is a plaque showing one of the earliest pieces of written music in England, the round "Summer is icumen in", penned by a monk here in the mid 13th century. The abbey was destroyed in 1538 by Henry VIII.

Trevelyan White Horse Nettlecombe Court: The Trevelyan family coat of arms shows a white horse rising from the sea, which was said to have saved its master by swimming with him from the mythical land of Lyonesse when it sank beneath the waves. Since 1967 the house has been used by The Field Studies Council as a Field Centre. The adjacent church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and built out of local red sandstone.

Porlock Church
Porlock Church

Culbone:  Englands smallest Parish Church. Local legend has it that the short spire is the top of Porlock Church which was blown off in a gale! It is situated in a secluded wooded valley which may have inspired Coleridge to write his poem Kubla Khan. (The spire of Porlock church at one time had a beacon light placed on top which is the real explanation for its strange cut off shape.)
